The Importance of Education with Mae Ola Dunklin, Brick by Brick Podcast Guest

“I believe that if you are going into education you need to have that hands-on experience”

Mae Ola Dunklin found her passion for education growing up in Louisiana. With a handful of factors impacting her passion, from a compassionate high school teacher to helping out in her younger sibling’s classroom, Dunklin loves to see the sparkle in a student’s eyes as they learn something new.

Dunklin was recruited to work in the Albion Public Schools District directly from college. Taking the leap, Dunklin moved to Albion with little contacts and a lot of ambition to educate. Once here, she got involved not only at Harrington Elementary School as a teacher and then principal, but also in a Big Brother, Big Sister Program, the Albion Branch NAACP, and Lewis Chapel AME Church, among so much more.

Soon after retirement, Dunklin got involved with education in a different manner. Moving just up the street from Harrington Elementary School, Dunklin began her work with Albion College and mentoring soon-to-be teachers in the Education Department. For years, Dunklin worked with students at Albion College through creating the Maymester program, giving hands-on experience to learning and teaching.

Today, Dunklin is still active with the Albion College Board of Trustees, and continues to improve education within the Albion community.
