Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated – Empowering Albion’s Families

Meet the ladies who are impacting food security of our youth, AKA, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. AKA is an international service organization dedicated to empowering families and the community*. With over 360,000 initiated members in graduate and undergraduate chapters*, 3 local Albion women are continuing their legacy in the Albion area: Vivian Davis, Mae Ola Dunklin, and Barbara Landry-Davis.

Throughout last school year and continuing this year, the Albion AKA ladies have been supporting food security for 11 students attending Crowell School’s Head Start program. Each identified student is in-need of additional support, and their families qualify by the  requirements set by AKA. Each recipient gets supplemental food for the three days they are not in school including a snack, lunch, and breakfast.

The focus on childhood hunger is an international goal of AKA with one of their focus areas being “Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack (CHIPPTM)”. All across the world, AKA chapters are supporting food security by providing “weekend and holiday meals for children”*. On the local level, Vivian Davis shared that she loves the opportunity to support and provide for the students.

Beyond CHIPPTM, AKA focuses on “Youth Leadership Institute”, “Mental Health Awareness”, and “Our Seniors”. Our local chapter has merged with Battle Creek to form a larger impact. With about 20 women total, the Albion – Battle Creek AKA has supported the men’s and women’s shelters with personal hygiene supplies, hosted a “Stuff the Bus” with clothes, school supplies, and basic needs for students, as well as scholarship opportunities for high school seniors.

Thank you to our local leaders in AKA for helping provide for our community!
