Albion Branch NAACP Annual Back to School Celebration

“Our goal is to help support the academic growth and well-being of our area kiddos.” – Eddie Williams, Albion Branch NAACP Education Committee Member

As school is fast approaching, so is the Albion Branch NAACP’s Annual Back to School Celebration! The annual celebration is chance for community connection and school preparation for Albion’s youth. I’ve recently spoke with a few key leaders of the Albion Branch NAACP; Branch President and 2nd Vice-President of the State of Michigan, Bob Dunklin, Education Committee Chair & Assistant Secretary, Mae Ola Dunklin, Education Committee Members, Eddie Williams, and Jessica Kane. Here are my questions and their collective answers.

When did the Back to School Celebration first start?

In 1984, the NAACP launched the “Back-School – Stay in School Program”. The program is based on a single premise – YOU MUST HAVE CHILDREN IN SCHOOL IN ORDER TO TEACH THEM! It is also designed to assist students with academic and social support. The first Albion Branch NAACP celebration was in 2005.

What was the motivation behind starting the Back to School Celebration?

The Back to School Celebration Initiative was started to give our students a great start at school. Many students would begin school without the necessary school supplies, and as an organization, we want students to have equitable resources and feel positive at the start of school. The NAACP wants to ensure that our youth have what they need. We also want to develop a relationship with the students, parents, and the school.

How has the celebration changed over the years?

There have been many changes over the years. We are now supported by many partners, which we did not have in the beginning. The Albion Community Foundation and Albion’s Big Read have become major co-sponsors. In recent years, we have been joined by Play Right Sports Academy and Orchards Children’s Services. All co-sponsors and partners support the academic success of the youth in our community and provide some type of services. The event also introduces families to services available within the community. It is a time of sharing and supporting from community organizations to volunteers. The celebration now has added a food and refreshment truck, as well as music.

What goes into the planning and preparation of the annual celebration?

Our committee spends many hours planning and organizing for the event. We sort and order supplies, solicit supporters and vendors, communicate and meet with school staff, pack supplies and setup event areas.

What is to be expected this year?

We expect to have many partners, volunteers, food, and music. Albion’s Big Read will have books, an effort to support reading at home and in the school. We usually have a surprise visit from the Albion College football team to mingle with the youth creating a joyous atmosphere for all to be a part of.

When and where is the Back to School Celebration this year?

The event is at 5:30PM August 19, 2024, outside Harrington Elementary School. The event is held in conjunction with Harrington’s Open House (students and parents must attend the open house before engaging in the Back to School Celebration).
