The Vision and Beginning
The vision for the Father & Son Picnic, a cherished annual Albion event, began in the late 90s when Greg Gant gained inspiration from National Father-Daughter Work Day and his work at STARR Commonwealth. Working at STARR’s youth home, Gant saw a pressing need to bridge the gap in role models and mentors for young boys. Fast forward to 2011, with the support of Pastor Phillips, donations from Family Fare, and a supportive community, the Father & Son Picnic came to fruition.
The Father & Son Picnic is intended to build community unity through great food, community fellowship, and fun activities. Gant strives to connect meaningful relationships between young men and leading community mentors. The event extends beyond a father-son relationship and into a community support event.
Growing Community Support
Over the years, the Father & Son Picnic has garnered immense support from local businesses and the community at large. Support comes from local and chain businesses, each doing what they can. Since 2016, women have actively participated by donating special dishes, further fostering a sense of togetherness. This collective effort has created a platform for the community to come together, support one another, and reinforce the bonds that hold them together. In 2023, a dedicated committee of men was formed to continue the growth and success.
The event typically sees a turnout of 250 to 300 people throughout the day, from 11 AM to 6 PM. Victory Park’ssmall pavilion becomes a bustling hub of activity, laughter, and bonding as families engage in a variety of fun-filled activities.
Honoring Influential Men
Since 2021, the Father & Son Picnic has included the “Man of Honor” recognition, celebrating men who have made significant impacts on the community. The first honoree was Greg’s father, Ron Gant, for his lifelong dedication to the Albion community including over 40 years in drivers training, service on the Housing Commission, City Council Member, and over 40 years of teaching. Subsequent honorees include:
2022: Dr. Kram & Harry Bonner Sr.
2023: Robert Holt
And this year’s honorees are former Recreation Department Director, Tilman Cornelius, and former Albion High School teacher and track coach, Mike Jurasek.
The 2024 Event: Bigger and Better
This year’s Father & Son Picnic is scheduled for Saturday, June 8th, from 11 AM to 6 PM at Victory Park. Attendees can look forward to an array of exciting activities, including a game truck, bounce houses, trivia, basketball, kickball, outdoor ax throwing, and a visit from the Chief of Police with a fire truck for water fun. There are also hopes to have a medical team on-site for blood sugar and pressure checks, continuing a tradition from previous years. The organizers are keen on involving as many local businesses as possible to enhance the event’s offerings. The event is open to everyone, women and girls are encouraged to attend. The core mission remains to foster stronger bonds between fathers and sons and promote intergenerational connections.
Mark your calendars and be part of an event that not only promises fun and bonding but also strengthens our community. See you at Victory Park!
